The challenge

After each new land-based energy project, Eneco strives to leave nature in a better state than it was before.

The energy company Eneco aims to place biodiversity at the heart of all its future projects. From 2025 onwards, each new land-based energy project must make a demonstratable positive contribution to nature: at least 110% nature restoration compared to the original situation.

This ambitious goal is a key part of Eneco’s One Planet Plan, where climate, biodiversity, circularity and social impact go hand in hand with the company’s strategy. However, without a reliable measurement method, ambitions remain abstract. Eneco sought a reliable approach to make biodiversity tangible and to measure and track their efforts.

The solution

Development of a tailored model to calculate biodiversity loss and gain.

110%

nature restoration after each new land-based energy project

Arcadis developed a customized model to accurately calculate biodiversity loss and gain, based on internationally recognized tools. The approach consists of four steps:

The biodiversity value of existing habitats is mapped before the start of a new energy project.
After realization, changes in nature are measured to identify gains or losses.
The before-and-after situation is compared, and the difference in biodiversity is precisely determined.
Based on these insights, targeted measures are implemented to ensure biodiversity is improved by at least 10% compared to the original situation.

For each project, we design a tailor-made plan for the restoration and management of local fauna and flora. An intelligent monitoring system tracks the results over the long term, allowing for adjustments as needed. This also helps Eneco to maximize collaboration with local partners and organizations.

Applying the Biodiversity Metric not only contributes to greater biodiversity but also strengthens collaboration with local, green stakeholders. By jointly exploring which new nature is desirable, we create a better plan and can rely on the support of residents and other stakeholders with a green heart. That's pure profit and increases the chances of achieving the desired nature goals. Together, we roll up our sleeves!

Preserving biodiversity offers essential benefits, such as clean water, crop pollination and climate regulation. These ecosystem services are not only crucial for nature but also form a foundation for healthy and future-proof business activities.

By embedding biodiversity in its strategy, Eneco shows that energy transition and nature restoration can go hand-in-hand, strengthening each other. The model developed by Arcadis for Eneco is scalable and applicable to other companies, both within and beyond the energy sector. With this approach, Eneco takes an important step in promoting biodiversity restoration and contributes to global initiatives such as the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration program.
