The challenge

Initially retained in 2001, Arcadis prepared a Facilities Master Plan followed by participation in a multi-year implementation process completed in 2015. Construction was initiated in 2002. The scope encompassed five buildings on Judiciary Square with the objective being the modernization of all facilities and the expansion and upgrade of the 680,000 sq. ft. Moultrie Courthouse to include facilities for a consolidated Family Court and all related legal and social services, criminal courts, civil courts, chambers, juror, clerk and holding facilities, U.S. marshals and required agency facilities. The project has an estimated reconstruction and expansion budget in excess of $300 million, covering 1.1m sq. ft. in facilities.

The solution

We’ve deployed facility and site master planning, architectural, and interior design for the District of Columbia Courts. As the prime contractor on a multi-year contract providing a broad spectrum of architectural and engineering (AE) services, our multidisciplinary project team participates in a wide range of activities ranging from basic AE to studies and property evaluations, to capital planning support, communications, and outreach. Our key sub consultants include MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing), fire protection, civil engineering, landscape, structural, signage, lighting, and cost consultants.

The impact

Our task order activities, in addition to basic AE services, have been varied including structural reinforcement and upgrades, complete life safety and accessibility review, hazmat assessment, energy improvements, MEP, and telecommunications infrastructure upgrades and coordination, security system coordination, perimeter security improvements, value engineering, and cost estimating.
