The challenge

The A100 highway is one of the most important arterial roads in Berlin. And now, the road is set to be extended from the Neukölln intersection through to the Treptower Park interchange to further improve access to long-distance, regional and city road networks. By 2024, the Federal Government and the State of Berlin will invest over 610 million euros in the project to improve connections between the eastern city districts, the central beltway and the A113. The new section of road will also provide faster access to Berlin Brandenburg Airport and Adlershof City of Science, Technology and Media. The improvements will also cut journey times to Dresden, Cottbus and Frankfurt an der Oder.

The solution

The construction of the brand-new road requires high-level highway planning and civil engineering expertise: The new 3.2-kilometer stretch of the A100 will have six lanes along its entire length and also includes a short section with eight lanes. Almost all of the road will be constructed in a cutting. In addition to the top-down construction of the Grenzallee tunnel, the project also involves the creation of seven intersections with other roads and railroad tracks. The construction of multiple railroad bridges requires close collaboration and coordination between various parties. Track installation planning for the S-Bahn suburban trains, DB AG long-distance trains and IGB Industriebahn freight trains was also part of the project.

    Coordinating a complex project

With its expertise in highway planning and civil engineering, Arcadis has formed a project committee with construction engineering and consultancy companies Grassl and Leonhardt, Andrä und Partner. The spectrum of Arcadis services ranges from drainage planning, structural engineering and noise insulation to traffic studies and coordinated pipeline planning.

Transforming travel with noise-reducing porous asphalt

Given that the highway runs through the center of Berlin, the new section of road between the Neukölln intersection and Treptower Park interchange will be constructed with noise protection walls of up to seven meters in height. The road will also be surfaced with noise-reducing porous asphalt.

The impact

Via the interchanges at Treptower Park, Sonnenallee and Grenzallee, drivers from the districts of east Berlin will be able to enjoy faster access to the city, regional and long-distance road networks. The new section of the A100 will significantly enhance the city's mobility offering for citizens and visitors alike. Berlin Brandenburg Airport and Adlershof City of Science, Technology and Media will now be more easily accessible from the city, as will Dresden, Cottbus and Frankfurt an der Oder.
