Arcadis Announces Completion of £30m Supercomputing Centre at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory
Global consultancy Arcadis is proud to announce the successful completion of the £30 million state-of-the-art supercomputing centre at the Science and Technology Facilities Council’s (STFC) Daresbury Laboratory.
This milestone marks the culmination of over four years of collaborative effort with our client UKRI STFC, delivered on time and on budget. The centre showcases the very best in collaborative design, project management, and construction expertise.
The cutting-edge 33,000 sq. ft. facility is poised to become a national hub for high-performance computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and quantum technologies. This structure is supported by the £210 million Hartree National Centre for Digital Innovation programme and will host the Hartree Centre’s rapidly expanding supercomputing activities, providing businesses with access to next-generation technologies that drive productivity, innovation, and economic growth.
Meeting the Challenge of Innovation
STFC identified the need for a modern, purpose-built facility to house its ever-growing suite of advanced technologies. Arcadis was appointed to deliver project management services from project inception to completion, leveraging our extensive expertise in complex laboratory and data centre construction design and delivery.
Utilising Arcadis’s five-point review framework, the final supercomputing centre will provide businesses across the UK, and particularly in the greater Liverpool region, with access to world-class computing capabilities.
Ben Small, Arcadis Life Science Sector Lead, said, “This project is a testament to the power of collaboration and integrated project management. We have delivered a world-class facility that will drive critical research and stimulate economic growth across the North West and beyond.”
Paul Austin, UKRI STFC Senior Construction Project Manager - Capital Delivery Team said, “Arcadis has demonstrated exceptional project management expertise throughout the delivery of our Supercomputer Centre, from the outset of the design through to its successful completion and transition in to operation.
“Their dedication, and understanding of our objectives ensured a seamless process, and demonstrated high standards in quality, project leadership and controls. They navigated complex challenges while maintaining a client-focused approach at all time, which has made them a trusted delivery partner.”
Looking Ahead
With the facility now complete, the next phase will see the installation of advanced computing systems and equipment. The Arcadis team will continue to support STFC with projects across their campuses.
The project team was led by Russell WBHO with Sudlows as the MEP contractor, ARUP as technical designers and supervisors, RLB for cost management, and Stride Treglown Architects.
