The challenge
The Atlanta region, known for its intricate and multi-faceted transportation network, needed a state-of-the-art, multi-modal trip planning system to meet the diverse needs of its commuters. The goal was to provide residents and visitors with personalized transportation options, including transit, biking, TNCs (e.g., Uber), and micro-mobility solutions. Additionally, regional transportation agencies required detailed analytics on customer trip plans to enhance service delivery.
The solution
Arcadis developed and launched ATL RIDES in early 2023, a system offering seamless multi-modal trip planning via responsive web and native mobile apps. The solution features:
- Data Aggregation: Utilizing TRANSIT-data-tools to integrate GTFS, GTFS-real-time, GTFS-Flex, and GBFS feeds from seven regional agencies and e-scooter/bikeshare operators. All data was quality-checked and deployed into the OpenTripPlanner (OTP) system.
- OpenTripPlanner (OTP): Deployed as the core routing engine for ATL RIDES, OTP allows users to plan, compare, and select transportation modes across the region through web and mobile interfaces
- Mobile Apps: Native iOS and Android apps were rolled out to complement the web application, delivering a consistent and user-friendly experience.
- Personalization: Features allow users to create accounts, save preferences and common locations, plan trips, and receive notifications on service alerts.
- Flexible Transit Services: Support for GTFS-Flex, enabling agencies to create and display flex services within the trip planning interface.
- Data Analytics: A management platform for agencies to analyze planned and tracked trips, providing valuable insights for service optimization.
