The challenge

Safety is at the heart of Connected and Automated Mobility (CAM). Strong evidence of safety will be key to the deployment of self-driving vehicles at scale and unlocking societal and economic benefits. The challenge has always been to put self-driving vehicles through their paces in a way which replicates enough of the day-to-day and edge case scenarios that we see on our roads. However, encountering enough of those edge cases on physical roads, in a timely, cost effective and safe manner, is unrealistic. Therefore, virtual verification and validation in a simulated environment is critical to the success of CAM.

Testing service providers offer simulation capabilities covering specific areas of focus needed to ensure the robust performance of self-driving vehicles on the road. When a company developing CAM products or services, or future regulators, need to access more comprehensive and flexible virtual testing services, the questions become: where do they go, what do they choose? This is the challenge that interoperable simulation addresses.

The solution

Zenzic was created by government and industry to champion the UK CAM ecosystem and lead the UK in accelerating the self-driving revolution. Arcadis and Reed Mobility were appointed by Zenzic to create a future plan for interoperable CAM simulation, inspired by the proof of concept demonstrator delivered by the world-leading CAM Testbed UK in a parallel strand of the project.

Arcadis led the creation of a future plan, which included a market strategy, operating model and investment case – for a distributed, interoperable simulation capability to be collaboratively developed by CAM Testbed UK for testing, certifying, and validating the performance of CAM solutions.

Virtual testing is one of the biggest enablers to the safe deployment of CAM around the globe. Many major players are investing heavily in in-house simulation capability, which is often closed and specific to their needs. The UK can take its strength in CAM simulation and compete globally by enabling collaboration through interoperable simulation. Bringing together the best-in-breed from around the UK into a simulation capability that can be easily accessed by customers will accelerate virtual validation and safe deployment of CAM technologies.

Our project will help the UK to realise this vision by developing the future plan for CAM Testbed UK to create an interoperable Software as a Service (SaaS) CAM simulation offer.

The impact

The outcome of the project is the creation of an evidence-based, credible future plan for an operational interoperable simulation solution for testing of CAM.

Human error is a factor in 95% of road accidents. Wide-scale adoption of self-driving vehicles offers great potential to reduce the number of accidents and save lives. Accelerating the safe deployment of CAM through interoperable simulation testing will reduce the time to mass adoption and as a result, reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads due to human error.

The Interoperable Simulation project secured the ‘most innovative solution in future mobility award’ at the IET E&T Innovation Awards 2022.
