Capacity growth of 36% at container terminal DP World Antwerp

THE CHALLENGE

The challenge

Antwerp Gateway, the container terminal operated by DP World Antwerp (DP is the abbreviation of Dubai Ports), is located on the left bank of the Scheldt and uses the largest tidal basin in the world. On the land side, the site is surrounded by a road heavily used by freight transport vehicles and a freight railway, which limits the physical possibilities of expanding this terminal. DP World Antwerp Gateway is therefore investing in innovative solutions to increase the capacity of the terminal from 2.5 million containers per year to 3.4 million by 2025.

The solution

The container handling company is therefore transitioning to automatic stacking cranes (ASC) that allow more efficient container arrangement and save time when loading and unloading containers. But to achieve the goal of significantly increasing total transhipment capacity in a few years, a targeted restructuring of the entire site is needed. To this end, DP World Antwerp Gateway relies on the help and expertise of Arcadis. Arcadis’s team of Belgian and Dutch experts will support the complete transformation of the terminal, including construction and infrastructure work, contract and cost management and technical supervision.

The impact

The volume of international container transport continues to increase. The further expansion and modernization of Antwerp Gateway strengthens Antwerp’s position on the market as Europe’s second largest container port after Rotterdam, and also provides additional jobs in transport and technology.
